Summary | Journalist Sarah Jaffe examines the new era of political engagement and social activism, including the $15 minimum wage and Black Lives Matter. |
Description | Pundits once fretted about Americans’ apathy, but in the last few years we’ve seen uprisings and protests across the country: the successful fight for a $15 minimum wage, Black Lives Matter, Occupy Wall Street, the rise of the Tea Party, and grassroots political networks.
In “Necessary Trouble,” journalist Sarah Jaffe leads readers into the heart of these movements, explaining what has made ordinary Americans from Seattle to St. Louis to Atlanta become activists. As Jaffe shows, Americans, regardless of political alignment, are boldly challenging who wields power in this country. Kirkus Reviews said: “… Jaffe debuts with an in-depth account of the wave of populist anger driving ‘a new era of protest and activism’ in the United States … Her insights offer a new context for understanding seemingly random events and the strong sense of solidarity underlying them.”
Sarah Jaffe is a Nation Institute fellow and an independent journalist covering labor, economic justice, social movements, politics, gender, and pop culture. Her work has appeared in The Nation, Salon, Washington Post, and many other publications. She is the co-host of Dissent magazine’s Belabored podcast and a columnist at New Labor Forum. |
